The lifespan of a tooth gem can vary greatly, lasting anywhere from two weeks to three years. Factors that influence its longevity include your saliva’s natural acidity, your diet, at-home care, the size of the gem, and its placement on the tooth.

To ensure your tooth gem lasts as long as possible, follow these aftercare instructions:
Avoid picking at or playing with your tooth gem.
Refrain from eating or drinking anything other than water for the first two hours.
Allow the adhesive bond to fully cure, which can take up to 48–72 hours.
Steer clear of hard foods or candies for the first 12 hours.
Avoid alcohol for the first 12 hours.

If your tooth gem needs to be removed, a dental professional can safely take it off using specialized tools, ensuring no damage to your tooth or surrounding tissues. In some cases, a local anesthetic may be used to make the process more comfortable. Please note, House of Beauty Austin does not offer removal services for tooth gems after application.

To protect the bond as it cures, avoid smoking or vaping for the first 12 hours after your appointment. Additionally, refrain from brushing your teeth during this time and try to maintain a less acidic pH in your mouth. Your technician will provide you with an aftercare card for guidance.

Wire retainers are safe to use with tooth gems. However, clear plastic tray-style retainers, such as Invisalign, are not recommended as they can put excessive pressure on the gem and tooth. Discuss your situation with your technician to ensure the gem's placement won’t interfere with your retainer.

If you accidentally swallow your tooth gem, there’s no need to worry. It will pass through your body naturally without causing harm.
